India’s stakes in this game have risen considerably following yesterday’s loss to Pakistan; they need to win today (a tie will do as well) to join Sri Lanka in the final. Mahela Jayawardene predictably chose to bat on yet another flat track in a game where, having already secured a place in the final, they can afford to experiment.
Sri Lanka have rested Chaminda Vaas and also decided to hold back their new spinning sensation Ajantha Mendis, whom most batsmen have found hard to pick. Dilhara Fernando and Kaushalya Weeraratne have been included in a four-man pace attack.
India also have opted for four fast bowlers, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni feeling the spinners were ineffective against the marauding Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq yesterday. Spinners Piyush Chawla and Yusuf Pathan make way for RP Singh and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who was impressive on his debut against Bangladesh last week.
Dhoni will be looking for an improved performance form his fast bowlers – they have taken only six wickets in four matches in this tournament. India’s fielding has also been below-par and, against a Sri Lankan top order which is in top form, any lapses are likely to prove costly.

Sri Lanka 1 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Kaushalya Weeraratne, 8 Thilan Thushara, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Dilhara Fernando.
